A Denver man died in a tragic motorcycle accident in Coal Creek Canyon northwest of Denver, according to the Denver Post. Very few details are available, at least until police are able to notify the man’s family of his death. Excessive speed is believed to have played a part in the accident, which apparently occurred when the man somehow lost control of his bike on a switchback turn. The 35-year-old man was driving a Yamaha sport bike. He was wearing a helmet, but nevertheless died at the scene of his injuries. The accident was investigated by the Colorado State Patrol.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, over 4,000 motorcyclists are killed in traffic accidents each year. Thousands more are seriously injured. Motorcycles offer far less inherent protection to their riders than cars and trucks, which means that everyone on the road needs to be aware of their presence at all times. An accident with a motorcycle always has the potential to do very serious harm to the rider, even in a situation where the driver of a car might not have been hurt. Motorcyclists can take steps, such as wearing helmets and riding leathers, to minimize the risk to themselves, but it is important for everyone on the road to drive safely and be aware of who else is on the road.
